Health Care Reform Vote Update

I certainly hope all of you are aware that the House of Representatives voted for health care reform last night! Here is an article from the NY Times and here one from CNN and here is one from Fox News although their lead article is about how much this vote will hurt Democrats in the next election. How did this vote pass? Pay special attention to the debate over abortion funding. Please read, post and comment as we will discuss all of this on Monday.

  1. I watched some clips of the floor debate, and it's a sad thing to see this level of partisanship. Only one republican voted for the bill, and he was from New Orleans. Dennis Kucinich, perhaps the most liberal member of the house, voted no as well. He says that the bill will only further enrich the private insurance companies. Young people will be required to buy their plans, the old and sick will be covered by the government, further increasing their profit margins.
It will be interesting to see what comes out of the Conference Committee, assuming the Senate passes something.

  4. The plan that has been passed in the NY times states that some money that goes into medicare would be redirected into the new plan. This is a funny idea because democrats have been on the defensive about keeping elders needs paramount if I am correct. Just stating that. Also, in this article, there is the stereotypical republican response from Kevin Brady, a Rep. in Texas. He said,"This government takeover has got a long way to go before it gets to the president’s desk, and I’ll continue to fight it tooth and nail at every turn." It seems like every republican response is the same. Haven't heard a real response.

  5. The H.R. 3962 or "The Affordable Health Care for America Act" would supposedly restrict insurance companies from denying customers/citizens with a pre-existing condition to get health insurance or they'd increase the original price depending on the individual case. The act would also give federal subsidies for those who can't afford health care. This would apparently guarantee health care insurance for 96% of Americans according to the CNN source which I'm copying 96% of. :)

We discussed some of this in class and from just grasping the basics of it, it sounds like a good development. When we discussed insurance companies denying customers it seemed like such a brutal system so this change would certainly be a more morally/better change.

"It seems like every republican response is the same. Haven't heard a real response." from cole

"I felt last night's decision was the proper decision for my district even though it was not the popular decision for my party," said Cao (whom of course was the sole individual from the republican party to vote for the bill.

  6. I thought that the video was interesting because both women thought that the bill would not pass and it did. They both thought that the bill was to vague. In the articles they all showed the happiness of the democrats and anger of the republicans when the bill passed. One major issue that affected many voters was the issue of healthcare and abortions.

  7. the fact that only one republican voted on the health care bill, shows the prejudice most of them have against anything that the democrats vote on. The democrats were ecstatic over the passing of the bill, but at the same time angry that not everything worked out for those who were pro abortion. Nancy Pelosi agreed to the Stupak Amendment in order to pass the bill. This bill bans coverage of Abortions under any government covered funding.

  8. While this is a major victory for democrats, I can't help but feel like they comprised to much. It was interesting what Nathaniel pointed out about Dennis Kucinich. Even though he is considered to be the most liberal person in the house, he still did not vote for the Democratic plan. This is because the plan still had the major insurance corporations making large amounts of money, and he believed that the bill did not reform the insurance industry enough. I feel that Democrats voted for the Bill just because it's Democratic, and Republicans didn't vote for it for the same reason. I really don't know if this Bill is the right thing for our country, even though I support health care reform.

  9. Even though the passing of the bill was a major accomplishment for the democrat party, I'm still surprised that such a big number of democrats did not vote for the bill. Yet, one republican did.

  10. Yes, this is a huge deal for all of the Democrats, and I think its funny that a Republican ended up voting for it.
